Locals take part in statewide leadership institute

JONESBORO — Clayton County residents Randle Ervwin, Sterling Laboo and Richard Nguyen were among 74 students statewide actively building leadership skills in a week-long program on the Emory University campus June 1-6.

During the Summer Youth Leadership Institute, students participated in interactive workshops, corporate tours, roundtable sessions with business leaders, team-building exercises and an etiquette dinner.

The institute is conducted through 21st Century Leaders, a youth leadership development program for Georgia high schoolers.

Clayton County residents earn academic recognition

Jonesboro resident Monica McKnight was among this spring’s 2014 Reinhardt University graduates.

Several Clayton County residents were named to the spring 2014 semester Dean’s List at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Forest Park resident An Pham of Forest Park; Seibou Gounteni and Traci Thomason, both of Riverdale; Rex resident Nghia Tran; and Lindsey Armstrong, Christana Fagbile, Cecili Reid and Divya Sawhney, all of Jonesboro. The designation is awarded to undergraduates who have a 3.0 or higher academic average for the semester.

Students from Clayton County named to the Armstrong Atlantic State University spring 2014 semester Dean’s List include: Rex resident Cassandra Connolly of Rex; Jonesboro residents Joshua Suttle, Jasmine Timmons and Samantha Wilt; and Heidi Fuson and Alexandria Nicholson, both of Riverdale. Dean’s List students earned a grade point average of 3.6 of higher for the semester.

Clayton County residents named to the spring 2014 semester Dean’s List at Gordon State College include James Hellams, Ornella Oluwole, Anthony Davis, Ryan Ferguson, Chitaya Mcmillan, Adam Serpas, Chelsey Stegg, Julie Lashley, Sheree Pressley, Angely Un, Daniel Camp, Emmanuel Amponsah, Lorena Alcantar and Christina Lawal. Maranda Bright and Essence Hodo were named to the Dean’s Merit List.

Columbus State University’s spring 2014 semester graduates included Rex resident Chatil Bradford and Lanise Barnett, Quenton Davis and Niesha Walker, all of Jonesboro.

Military notes

Army Spec. Renel Thelamour has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus. Thelamour, the son of Madelina Thelamour of Rex, earned a bachelor’s degree in 2002 from Morehouse College.
