Clayton pupils spend summer in math learning program

JONESBORO — Clayton County Public Schools students are learning to make the grade through the district’s summer learning program in math.

The district’s teaching and learning department has created a math program to encourage learning over the summer in anticipation of the new school year.

Officials said summer learning math packets are available for students who completed coursework in grades three through eight, coordinate algebra or analytic geometry in 2013-14. The packets were created to provide extra practice on needed skills that are expected to enhance students’ success in the coming school year.

Included in the packet is a list of technology-based resources to aid parents and students as they progress through math problems. An instructional video will be available on Educational Cable Access Channel 24 for students and parents to view.

The video teaches students how to solve sample problems from each grade-level packet. The video will be available from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily, through Thursday.

Spokeswoman Vicki Gavalas said more than 12,000 students are taking part in the summer learning program. She said that, because of the interest the program has garnered, the district is expanding its availability to all students in target grade levels.

The district’s K-12 math coordinator, Dr. Audrey Greer, explained the importance of the summer learning project.

“Math is a cumulative discipline,” said Greer. “Each course builds upon previous concepts with more complexity, more integration and more independent work as students transition from grade level to grade level and course to course. We are making the most of our technology resources to bring these learning opportunities to our students.”

Students will receive bonus points in their math class for completion of the packet. To earn the bonus points, students must return completed packets to their math teachers in the fall.

Packets for each grade level are available for pick-up at the district office, 1058 Fifth Ave. in Jonesboro. Packets are also available online with the video at www.clayton.k12.ga.us.
