JONESBORO — The NFL is doing its part in giving back to the city of Jonesboro.

After the NFL HSPD finished their tournament/character building program not too long ago with local high schools, former player Erick Downing will be hosting a football camp on Saturday on behalf of USA Football and NFL Play 60. It will be held at Mount Zion High School from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. for all children ages 5-15. This is Downing’s second year hosting the camp.

Erick Downing is a native of Ahoskie, N.C.., before becoming an all-state football player at John F. Kennedy High school in New Jersey. He played for Syracuse University.

After a successful career for the former Big East Conference school, he was drafted in the third round of the 2001 NFL draft. He went on to play three years with the Kansas City Chiefs and one season with the San Diego Chargers.

The USA Football FUNdamentals camp puts its athletes through passing, catching and running drills in a non-contact setting. In addition, the camp introduces proper tackling techniques. All drills are based on a development model to make sure that everything is age appropriate and relative to players’ physical skill level. Other NFL players who have FUNdamental camps include CJ Spiller, Danell Ellerbe, Captain Munnerlyn and Demaryus Thomas.

The camps are free, one-day clinics. All campers will receive free T-shirts and all equipment (footballs, cones, etc.) will be provided by USA Football. Registration can be done at www.usafootball.com/fun or at 7 a.m. at the camp site.
