CCPD officer charged with lying to McDonough police

Officer of Year for 2013 arrested in Henry

JONESBORO — Clayton County Police Department’s 2013 Officer of the Year has been arrested and charged with lying to McDonough police over an apparent self-inflicted stabbing.

Christopher Vincent Russo, 34, of Carrington Green Parkway in McDonough was arrested Friday and bonded out of Henry County Jail on one count of felony false statements or writings and misdemeanor false report of a crime.

Clayton County police Chief Greg Porter said Russo is on unpaid leave pending the outcome of an Internal Affairs investigation.

“Integrity is paramount in these matters and I want to ensure this inquiry remains objective so that when this investigation has been completed, it will be clear the Clayton County Police Department values transparency,” said Porter.

Porter also confirmed the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting routine procedural investigations into two previous officer-involved shootings involving Russo.

According to warrants issued through Henry County Magistrate Court, Russo allegedly told McDonough police officers he was attacked by two unknown men burglarizing his home at 2 a.m. Thursday. Police said Russo told them one of the men stabbed him before fleeing.

In an incident report filed by McDonough police, Russo reportedly told officers he left home about 10 p.m. March 12 and returned at 1:30 a.m. the next day. Russo allegedly told police his door, which he had locked, was unlocked when he returned.

Police said Russo told them he was sprayed in the face with oleoresin capsicum, or OC, and struggled with two unknown men. Russo said one of the men stabbed him in his right arm, according to the report.

Russo was treated at Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge.

However, McDonough police officer reached out to GBI agents because of what they deemed to be inconsistencies in Russo’s version of events.

Porter said Russo has worked with the department for three years and was honored in 2013 as Officer of the Year.
