Mrs. Mary Newton Baker
Mrs. Mary Newton Baker, age 91 of McDonough, GA and Blairsville, GA passed away on March 22, 2014. She is the daughter of the late James Gordon and Thelma Hyde Newton of Lake City, FL. Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by her infant son, Howard Franklin Baker, Jr and her husband, Dr. Howard F. (Bill) Baker, retired Henry County Schools Superintendent. Mary was born in Poplarville, MS and moved to Homerville, GA at the age of seven.
She is a graduate of Homerville High School where she was a star player for the Homerville Lady Panthers. Mrs. Baker is a graduate of Georgia State Woman’s College (GSWC) now Valdosta State University(VSU). While at GSWC, Mary was selected as the first Miss Spirit of Turpentine by the American Turpentine Framers Association (ATFA). Mrs. Baker began her teaching career in Homerville teaching 62 second graders in one class with no assistance. After World War II, Bill and Mary moved to Atlanta for Bill to attend Emory University. After his graduation, Bill and Mary moved to Locust Grove when Bill became the teaching principal at Locust Grove School and Mary began teaching at McDonough High School.
Mary continued her teaching at Stockbridge Elementary School and concluded her 32 year teaching career at Stockbridge Junior High School in June 1980. In 1976, Mary was named Henry County Teacher of the Year. She was an active member of the Clayton/Henry/Fayette Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Mary served as President of the Henry County Retired Educators Association during 1982-83 and continued to be an active member receiving her Emeritus Certificate at age 90 in 2013. In retirement the Bakers moved for 10 years to Tybee Island, Georgia where Mary was active in Trinity United Methodist Church and numerous civic and service organizations. The Bakers returned to McDonough in June 2000.
Mary Newton Baker is survived by her son, Dr. Gordon Newton Baker, Dean of Libraries at Clayton State University. Other survivors include: sister Jane Newton (Theron) Smith, Gainesville FL; nieces and nephews, Cindy and Bill Franklin, Jacksonville FL; Dr. John and Rosemary Spiegel, Macon; Caroline and Dan Asikainen, Reno, NV; Michael and Teresa Baker, Columbus; and Howard and Nancy Smith, Johns Creek, five great nieces and nephews and Tom Lewis and Cooper Lewis
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Henry County Humane Society, the Henry County Public Library, or the Building Fund of the McDonough 1st United Methodist Church.
The family would like to express thanks to the staffs of Dogwood Forest at Eagle’s Landing, Henry Medical Center, and Southern Crescent Specialty Hospital for all their care and kindness to Mrs. Baker in her time of need.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Cannon Cleveland Directors with Rev. Darris Baker officiating. Interment will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. Louise Underwood Flemmen
After a four-year courageous battle with cancer, Louise Underwood Flemmen died on March 24, 20142 at the age of 94. She is survived by her daughters, Arolue Flemmen of Morrow, and Stenette Flemmen Brooks, DVM (Russell) of Madison. Her husband of 27 years, Russell Ole Flemmen predeceased her in 1978.
Born in Moultrie, GA on November, 8, 1919, she was the youngest of eight children of parents Henry Clay and Julia Underwood. There are no surviving siblings, but there are nieces and nephews, their children and grandchildren. Louise took great pride in completing her education and taking business courses to further her career in secretarial work. She held several positions, eventually retiring from Clayton County Water Authority after sixteen years of employment.
An active member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Forest Park, GA for 51 years, Louise served in many capacities including church council and treasurer.
An avid gardener, Louise most enjoyed yard work. Other activities included traveling, bowling, sewing and playing cards. A strong and independent woman, she was known for her competitiveness and candid, straight-forward personality.
A graveside service at 10:00 AM will be conducted at Sherwood Memorial Park and Mausoleum, 6841 Tara Blvd., Jonesboro, GA on Saturday, March 29, 2014. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 3250 Mt. Zion Rd., Stockbridge, GA with Pastor George Earhart officiating. Afterward, a reception and celebration of her life will be held in the church fellowship hall.

Mrs. Cynthia H. Gregg
March 26, 1954 – March 24, 2014
Mrs. Cynthia Kay Hall Gregg, age 59 of Hampton, Georgia passed away Monday, March 24, 2014 at her residence.
Mrs. Gregg was born in Newnan, Georgia on March 26, 1954. She is preceded in death by her father, Felton Hall, son, Daniel Gregg. She was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church and had worked as a certified medical assistant.
Survivors include her husband, Danny Gregg; daughter and son-in-law, Danielle and Paul Biggs; grandchildren, Samantha, Brooke, Savannah; her mother, Bernice Carr; sisters, Denise Lee, Sharon White and Elaine Johnson; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Mrs. Cynthia Gregg will be on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Reverend Roger Robinson will officiate. Interment will follow in Camp Memorial, Fayetteville.

David “Shorty” Smith
David “Shorty” Smith, age 69, of Stockbridge, GA passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014. He was born in Atlanta, GA to the late Elbert Norton and Lillian Dorothy Vaughn Smith.
Mr. Smith is survived by his five children: Robert, Rhonda, Dana, Kim and Amanda; siblings: Tommy, Shirley, Frank, Mike and Sammy; 10 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
