MORROW — The Morrow City Council may take the phrase “Let’s all go to the movies” to a whole new level.
Mayor J.B. Burke told council members Tuesday that AMC theaters officials want to take them on a “research field trip” to metro Atlanta locations that sell alcohol. City Manager Ronnie Few told the council earlier this month that AMC Southlake wants the city’s permission to begin selling alcohol to theatergoers.
Burke said company officials were not ready to make a full presentation during a council meeting.
“They wanted a little more time so they could present it in a little more comprehensive manner,” Burke said.
Underage theater patrons access to alcohol has been a key issue holding up AMC’s request, which has only been discussed in council work sessions so far. Council members have raised several questions about how the theater would prevent minors from buying alcohol, or having someone buy it for them.
AMC offers alcohol through MacGuffins Bar and Grill restaurants which are built inside the theater lobbies. There are four theaters in Georgia that have MacGuffins, including two in Buckhead, one near Cumberland Mall and another near North Point Mall in Alpharetta.
City Attorney Steve Fincher warned the council that they would have to comply with Georgia’s Open Meetings Act if they took the field trip as a group. That would mean residents and media would have to be informed in advance and be allowed to attend.
“Unless you travel as a group to review the facilities of another governmental entity, then it’s an open meeting and you would have to comply with open meeting rules,” Fincher said.
No date has been set yet for when the council will consider the theater chain’s request during a business meeting.
