Officials report on future Lovejoy skatepark

LOVEJOY — Officials reported downtown park amenities are moving ever-closer to fruition in Lovejoy.

The city unveiled plans for a new skateboard park about a year ago, and have since garnered support from county officials to continue pursing ways to improve and expand its recreational infrastructure.

Clayton County Commissioner Michael Edmondson, who represents Lovejoy, recently met with Mayor Bobby Cartwright, visiting the potential site of the skateboard park where they reviewed plans for the new recreation area in the heart of downtown.

Spokeswoman Kaycia Rhone said the proposed park features a course for skateboarding, walking trail, multipurpose field and new outdoor basketball court.

The park is planned for construction behind Lovejoy Community Center at 11622 Hastings Bridge Road, moving the existing playground to Mayor’s Park next door.

Rhone said the city was able to secure a HUD Grant approved by the Clayton County Board of Commissioners in late 2013.

Cartwright said he was happy to partner with Clayton County on the project.

“I am thankful to the county, especially Commissioner Edmondson for his support on this and all of Lovejoy’s current projects,” said Cartwright in a press release statement. “The youth in the community are excited about a place to skate.”

Residents and business owners have expressed support for the park as well.

Cartwright said the city continues to work with the county on securing the final portion of the land necessary before construction begins. The city plans to use funds anticipated collections from the 2015 SPLOST, if approved, to supplement funding provided by grants to complete the project.
