JONESBORO — A former Clayton County teacher wanted on multiple charges including child molestation and sexual battery has been apprehended by a fugitive task force, the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday evening.

Derek Christopher Gray, 29, is considered a “top six sex offender,” according to the Sheriff’s Office. The office said he is facing charges of sexual battery under 16, sexual assault/hospital or institution, aggravated sexual battery, child molestation, aggravated child molestation, sodomy and enticing a child for indecent purposes.

Gray resigned from his position as a teacher at the Elite Scholars Academy charter school a year ago after allegations of inappropriate conduct were made against him.

Court records show a grand jury indicted Gray April 24 on 23 counts. The records also show a true bill bench warrant was issued for his arrest May 1. His case is pending before Superior Court Judge Bobby Simmons and June 4 arraignment date has been set.
