Sheriff’s Office: demands of money to avoid arrest are a scam

Residents should call law enforcement

JONESBORO — The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office warned residents Sunday night to not fall for a scam involving individuals pretending to represent the office while demanding money to avoid arrest warrants.

“Person or persons impersonating Sheriff’s Office personnel are calling citizens telling them they have a warrant for their arrest for failing to appear for jury duty and to wire money to avoid arrest,” the office said in a Nixle text alert blast. “This is a scam. This is not a method the Sheriff’s Office uses to collect fines or resolve warrant issues.”

Anyone who receives such a demand is asked to call the police or the sheriff’s office. The Sheriff’s Office’s Warrant Office can be reached at 770-477-4479.
