HAMPTON — Elijah Gonzalez-Amaya slyly asked his dad about going out to dinner before handing him a formal invitation to the school “Dinner with Dad” program.

Puzzled at first, his father, Angel Amaya, accepted the invite.

They were among the first to arrive at the event — dad in a shirt and tie and son in a more casual double-pocket button down shirt. Other smiling fathers came dressed casually with their sons and daughters.

The program featured guest speaker Patrick Phillips of Lake City and included a turkey spaghetti dinner. Kids also watched a movie.

Organizers said they hope the bonding activity, designed to encourage more paternal involvement at school, will be a regular occurrence at Eddie White K-8 Academy.
