JONESBORO — Arts Clayton Gallery Manager Teri Williamson got to do something Friday that the public rarely gets to see her do at the gallery.

She swung around a hammer.

OK, it technically wasn’t swinging as much as it was rocking back and forth on a nail. Williamson had to remove the nail so art installers could hang a sign for the State Art Collection Tour exhibit that was being unpacked at the gallery.

“This isn’t as uncommon as you think,” said Williamson as she tried to pull the nail out of the wall. “This is the kind of stuff we do every time we install a new exhibit. The public just doesn’t get to see us do it.”

The gallery, at 136 South Main St. in Jonesboro, was closed Friday as installers hung art for the two-month exhibit. The display will have a soft opening today. However, the official grand opening of the exhibit will be marked with a reception to be held June 6, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Arts Clayton Executive Director Linda Summerlin said county and state officials will be on hand to give remarks during the reception.

While the exhibit is in Jonesboro, visitors will be able to see works of art the state collected decades ago. All of the pieces in the collection were made by Georgia artists.

Arts Clayton is one of nine galleries across the state chosen to host a leg on the tour. To get on the tour, it had to partner with a local downtown development authority to co-host the stop. Arts Clayton’s partner is the Morrow DDA.

Morrow Mayor J.B. Burke is expected to give remarks during the reception, Summerlin said.
