During a recent five-year span in Georgia, lightning strikes killed 11 and injured 77 people, but officials advise there are safety measures that can be taken to avoid becoming a statistic.
The stream of abnormal weather events began in January with the ice storm that wreaked havoc throughout the region. Georgia's 2011 calendar has been studded ever since with severe weather, from the devastation of tornadoes to threat of drought.
A severe thunderstorm blew through the Southern Crescent Monday night leaving behind a trail of downed trees, power outages, damaged homes, automobiles, and two deaths. It also sparked several delays at the world's busiest airport, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson.
