JONESBORO — Clayton County Police say a man has confessed to raping a woman as she was walking to a bus stop on June 5.
Officers responded to a “trouble unknown” call near Flint River Road and Glenwoods Drive in Jonesboro. “Upon arrival, the officers discovered that the call was actually a rape in progress and the victim was running down the street screaming for help.”
The man allegedly had dragged the woman into the woods and attacked her, but the woman fought back and was able to get away, police said.
She described the man to CCPD officers, who searched the area and found a suspect fitting that description. Police detained the man without incident and the woman was transported to a hospital.
During an interview with CCPD detectives, police say the man confessed.
A Nixle release by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Thomas Bernard, 18. An Anthony Thomas Bernard Jr., 18, of Jonesboro, is being held in the Clayton County Jail on rape, robbery, kidnapping, giving police a false identity and an arrest order. He was booked at 3:50 p.m. June 5 and, as of press time, was being held without bond.
Chief Kevin Roberts told the News that the suspect is not the serial rapist who has attacked at least seven women in Clayton County in recent months.
