JONESBORO — Clayton County Public Schools has crowned Fikumni Akinsola the top speller in the 2019 District Spelling Bee.

The Arnold Elementary School fifth-grader correctly spelled “gypsum” to win first place.

Eighth-grader Simon Tran of Morrow Middle earned second; Kiara Day, seventh-grader at Eddie White Academy, took third; and sixth-grader Rosalie Owusu of M.D. Roberts Middle finished fourth. The top four finishers qualify for upcoming regional competition.

A total of 48 elementary and middle schools participated in the Jan. 31 competition.

Superintendent Morcease Beasley offered his congratulations to both the winners and all students who participated.
