JONESBORO — Elite Scholar’s Academy Sports Complex has a new name.
The Clayton County Board of Education voted 7-2 to name the complex the Mike Glanton Royal Knight Sports Complex. Board members Jasmine Bowles and Mark Christmas abstained.
Bowles said she’d heard from several constituents who were not in favor of the name.
“I’m sitting here, but it’s not my seat. It’s my constituents’ seat, and I have to vote for them,” she said.
Christmas declined to give a reason for his abstention.
During public participation, community member Aretha Ensley said naming the complex after Glanton was like “free advertising” for someone in office.
“I believe there are other people you could name the complex after,” she said. “Maybe you should do it after he gets out of office.”
In May, Elite Scholars Academy School Complex made a request to the BOE to rename the complex.
“The honorable Mike Glanton Sr. has been a public servant/volunteer/leader for Clayton County and a founder and cheerleader for Elite Scholars Academy for over 10 years,” Academy officials said in the request.
Glanton, D-Jonesboro, has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2007. He represents District 75 which includes the cities of Jonesboro and Morrow.
