MORROW — A Jonesboro team has received recognition for strategy and innovation in the 2014 First Lego League Super Regionals at Clayton State University.

The Steampunk Robotic Technology Club earned the Robot Design Strategy & Innovation Award during the annual competition, held earlier this month on the Clayton State campus.

This year’s version of the increasingly popular competition for young science, technology, engineering and mathematics whizzes ages nine to 14, was sponsored by the university’s College of Information and Mathematical Science.

Assistant Professor of Mathematics Dr. Scott Bailey directed the FLL Super Regionals. He noted the championship qualifying round — one of six throughout the state — included 32 teams from around metro Atlanta, from Griffin to Dunwoody.

FLL competition consists of three parts: the Robot Game, the Project and the Core Values. The top teams from the six super regionals in Georgia will advance state competition.

Organizers said this year’s state-level contest will be at two sites on separate days due to the growth of the tournament. The Georgia Tech State Championship is Saturday at the G. Wayne Clough Undergraduate Learning Center in Atlanta. The University of Georgia State Championship is Feb. 7 at the Miller Learning Center in Athens.
