JONESBORO — Two of Jonesboro’s finest received new badges in a brief ceremony during Monday’s City Council work session.

Officer John Upole, who has been with the Jonesboro Police Department since November 2012, was promoted to sergeant, while Investigator Ronnae Tolbert, who has been with the department since January 2016 was promoted to detective.

“Sgt. Upole reports to work with a positive attitude,” Mayor Joy Day read from comments recommending the officers’ promotions. “He is compassionate and courteous when performing his duties. Investigator Tolbert always displays a positive, can-do attitude and is always willing to help her coworkers. She strives for perfection in meeting her responsibilities.”

Police Chief Cliff Kelker called family members forward to pin the officers’ new badges, “because at this point, in a leadership capacity, a lot is expected of the family. They’re (the officers) going to get called away sometimes from family events, other things going on, so we look for your support. By your pinning, we ask that you pledge your support in the task that they’re undertaking, because not only being a great police officer, they’re now leaders of other police officers.”

Upole, Tolbert and their families then adjourned to police headquarters, where they celebrated with cake and fruit salad.
