Mount Zion High School returns with numerous three- and four-year starters to lead the program.

The Bulldogs did one better in 2018 finishing with a 2-8 record but it’s worth noting how many athletes return this season. From the quarterback to the defensive backs the returners are plenty for head coach Kevin Jones and the Bulldogs.

“We returned a lot of starters,” Jones said. “Three- and four-year starters so it’s just like that puppy that got beat up as a ninth grader. When we were going down to Lowndes and playing ELCA and Tucker, one year we were played three No. 1 teams in the state, and got our heads knocked off. Well those puppies are now big dogs and now it’s time to bite.”

Quarterback Tyjauan Rogers is back under center following a 15-touchdown campaign. The Bulldogs’ running game was led by Montreil Freeman and his 302-yard campaign. Top passing target Taariik Brett also is also back. Brett and Freeman are rising juniors and should benefit from the extra experience.

The Bulldogs have been a defensive inclined team over the past few seasons, as evidenced by the five games that finished with a possession or less on the scoreboard.

Along with the offensive starters, Kemareyon Boone (5 INTs) and Kamari Murphy (2 INTs) will be back on the defensive side of the ball.

Terrorizing quarterbacks, running backs and anyone near his range, outside linebacker Kameron Wilson returns in 2019. Wilson compiled 68 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and nine sacks.

“We’ve got some unfinished business,” Jones said. “We’re looking forward to finishing that unfinished business. We want to cut out the talk that we competed well, and we competed for a quarter or a half — we’re ready to finish the games. I think the kids really embraced accountability for finishing.”
