CARROLLTON — Mundy’s Mill moved to 2-1 on the season with a 24-21 road victory over Central-Carrollton High Friday night at Roy Richards Memorial Stadium.
With the Lions clinging to a four-point lead entering the fourth quarter and having the opportunity to improve to 2-1 on the campaign, the visiting Tigers rallied for the road win in what proved to be a painful turn of events over the final 12 minutes of play.
Central (1-2) opened the fourth quarter by putting together a 16-play march down the field to the Mundy’s Mill 3-yard line, but the offense couldn’t finish the drive and ended up coming away with no points following a missed field goal.
The Tigers (2-1) quickly capitalized on the momentum swing, where a 23-yard swing pass from quarterback Ryan Nobles to Eric McGee set up a 52-yard touchdown run from Raheem Gaines to put the visitors ahead by three.
The Lions were looking to return the favor with an answer of their own, but an interception by Tiger safety Keyako Moore ultimately sealed Central’s fate.
Mundy’s Mill took the early 6-0 advantage on a five-yard touchdown run by Crushon Jackson, but the Lions responded with a one-yard touchdown run from Braden Dunson early in the second quarter, which was followed by a fortuitous bounce on the ensuing kickoff to put the ball back in Central’s hands.
From there, junior Shane Bruce rattled off a 22-yard touchdown run to stretch the lead heading into halftime at 14-9 after a Tiger field goal.
A 13-yard touchdown run by Narada Levett with 3:32 to go in the third put Central up by two scores, but the visitors responded with a quick strike and two-point conversion to make it a 21-17 contest entering the final period, leading to the frustrating finish for Central head coach Darius Smiley and Co.
Mundy’s Mill will host Morrow at Twelve Oaks Stadium next Friday.
