Morning-line favorite Authentic will start from the ninth post position when the 145th Preakness Stakes is held Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

Authentic, the Kentucky Derby winner, received that position Monday in the draw for the 11-horse field and will try to win the Preakness, the final leg of the Triple Crown amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Tiz the Law won the first leg, the Belmont Stakes, but finished second in the Derby. The horse's handlers opted not to race the colt at Pimlico.

In typical years, the Triple Crown series starts with the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May, followed by the Preakness and the Belmont.

John Velazquez will ride Authentic, who is trained by Bob Baffert. The horse is a 9-5 favorite.

"I didn't want to be in the 1-hole and I didn't want to be in the 11 with him," Baffert said after the draw. "But he's got to get away from there well. He's a good gate horse."

Art Collector, the No. 2 horse in the betting field at odds of 5-2, drew the No. 3 post position. At odds of 6-1, Swiss Skydiver (No. 4 position) and Thousand Words (No. 5) are next in the betting line.

On Sept. 5 in the Derby, Authentic finished 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Tiz the Law to win in 2:00.61 and give Velazquez his third Derby victory. The winner, who set off at 8-1 odds, paid $18.80 to win, $6 to place and $5 to show.

It was Baffert's record-tying sixth Derby win.

Post time for the Preakness, which was postponed from its original date of May 16, is 6:45 p.m. ET. The race will be televised on NBC, with coverage beginning at 4:30 ET.

The Preakness will be run without spectators because of COVID-19 concerns.
